Line/Copy Editing

Line editing and copy editing are often what people think of when they prepare for “editing” their manuscript. Traditionally, these are completed in two separate phases, but the trend toward combining them has become more and more popular. When a publisher reaches out asking for a line edit, I always take that to mean “line and copy edit.” And when a publisher asks for a “heavy copy edit,” I likewise interpret that they are looking for a line edit.

What’s the difference?

Line editing focuses on the writing itself, ensuring it is clear, effective, engaging, accurate, and that it adheres to and strengthens the author’s voice, style, and tone. Changes may be made at the sentence or paragraph level to cut down on clunky repetition, expand where clarification is needed, and improve the text’s rhythm and flow.

Copy editing, much like proofreading, deals with issues pertaining to spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, formatting, and other technical errors. Unlike proofreading, this work is done prior to the manuscript being formatted and goes beyond the basic conventions of spelling and grammar to address issues with consistency: Is an ice cream shop referred to as Mitzy’s Scoops in one place and Molly’s Scoops in another? Does the character’s age line up with the year provided for his birth? Are verifiable dates and historical events accurate?

To avoid confusion and ensure you’re getting the best result possible, I’ve combined my line and copy editing services into one package. Please note that while I occasionally accept prescriptive nonfiction projects at this level, I primarily work on novels and memoirs at the line/copy editing stage.

    When you work with me as a line / copy editor, you’ll get:

    At least one detailed pass of editing using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature.
    Positive feedback using Word’s Comments feature to point out areas where the text really shines.
    Corrections relating to consistency, spelling, grammar, syntax, dialogue tags, awkward or unclear language, repetition, and “telling” versus “showing.”
    Feedback pertaining to inclusive and conscientious language use (as with my sensitivity reading service).
    Formatting adjustments to ensure you are not left with extra spaces, tabs, nonbreaking spaces, or any other elements that will create issues at the typesetting stage.
    Corrections to minor issues with point of view, head hopping, and plot inconsistencies (if extensive corrections are required, I will provide you with feedback about this and examples of where and why it is an issue but will not make these changes myself).
    If relevant, feedback on whether there are any other big-picture areas that still need to be addressed (this is done as a courtesy for lingering issues and not as a replacement for a full developmental edit).
    A final pass to review any minor changes you’ve made or questions you’ve left based on my suggestions, and the delivery of both a “marked up” and “clean” version of the text.
    A style sheet with detailed notes about your personal preferences, the story’s timeline, repeated grammar or stylistic issues, major and minor characters, real and fictitious places, and words that appear throughout the manuscript to ensure consistency between this stage of editing and any proofreading stages that follow.
    Investment

    My line/copy editing rate is are typically $0.03/word. This rate may be higher for a project that requires heavy research or fact checking or lower for a project that has already been through a round of professional line editing.
